Watch Out Nintendo, Sony is after your other market now!


We have staff at the conference going on now, and we have just reveived word that Sony's father of PlayStation,Ken Kutaragi, has announced a handheld video game system! The new system is called PlayStation Portable. This system uses a mini CD, fits in the palm of your hand. It looks like a mini disc with the outer casing - UMD - universal media disc. 2.4" diameter, 1.8 gigs storage.


It will have an anti-piracy

Will also use MPEG 4, widescreen LCD 16:9 screen, backlit,

Can do 3D polygons and curved surfaces.

480 x 232 pixels, 4.5" unit.

Will have a memory stick

I still believe that the GBA and its successor will prevail. I mean look at Game Gear, and that was years ahead of Gameboy but that failed and Nintendo won that battle.

GB has been around for how long again? like 14 years. has anything ever stopped it from prevailing? i think not, so Nintendo will MOST LIKELY still remain numero uno in the handheld market

You didnt realize that this thing wont be released until Q4 2004, just because this system "can" do better graphics doesnt mean that it will have better games, Game Gear was years ahead of the original GB but that failed and GB succeded, the next GBA will probably be out by then or within 6 months - year of PSP's release, the battery life is going to suck major ass, and if just PSX games are gonna be ported to it when its first released then its gonna suck just like PSX did.

Rick i'm sure more companies will flock to Sony's handheld simply because the games will be easier to make for them. It's going to turn out just like N64 vs PSX days and the summery is that software companies preferred making cd's over cartridges.

If it can do better games........... it can handle more games. A couple year old PC ports would be prime candidates, along with, of course, PSX games. The GameGear was years ahead - but was huge, required 6 batteries, and had a short battery life. And if Nintendo were to release a new GBA a year and a half after they just release one........... I'm sure many GB owners would be pissed. It would then seem as though Nintendo is going to come out with a new handheld every year and a half or so, so the people might aswell wait for the next one.

And how do you know the battery life is going to suck major ass? :susp:

I'll buy this if its price is reasonable. Sounds like what i wanted Nintendo to do like 5 friggen years ago.

Anyway, Gameboy Advance / SP = Dead. This is going to be another Nintendo 64 vs. PSX. GB has always stayed dominant because nobody challenged them, and the people who did were small ass companies with no backing and no money.

Sony has the 1.8 gig disks which hold more then GCN's 1.5 gig disks even. Plus 3D, MPG 4, etc. If Nintendo does decide to go to mini disks then they will lose their backwards compatibility and have to start on a clean slate. And pray to god that Sony doesn't steal any developers like square from GBA, because right now its not looking good for GBA's future.

this is good news,even if this sony handheld isn't very good it will make Nintendo get off thier ass and develope something better because there is some competition. Nintendo's has had very little competition over the past 14 years with their hand held department, and thats the reason why we have only 2 gameboy systems over the past 14 years. I was always pissed that nintendo waited so long to release another gameboy system. So now, Nintendo will probably start making bigger and better hand held systems, and not wait forever to release a new one. Just my little rank, make what you will of it.
