FF7 help

I finally got my hands on Final Fantasy 7 this morning, and i decided to install a couple of hours ago. I installed teh game and then installed the XP patch, but everytime i open the game it reaches the area where it says continue/new game, and for some reason i can't move upwards from continue to new game. I read the instructions and it says i have to use my num pad, and i have tried using it but it hasn't worked, i have no clue what to do, therefore someone please help i'll rep for help, i have been waiting to get my hands on this game for too long for it to slip now.

Is your number pad on? Theres a light to know if it is on.

how do i activate my num lock on a laptop?

there should be a button somewhere. i have ff7 pc, have had it for a while, and boy howdy its amazing.

just figuired out how to work it, but for the time being i am going to lend it to a friend, because for the next 3 days i need to concentrate on my exams
