Have you noticed that these two games have allmost the exact same type of game play. Both of them present challenges that you cannot complete until latter in the game, and both require extensive exploration. I have a theory that Metroid is just a sci-fi sidescroller (or fps) version of zelda's top down view. Both of them use the same core gameplay.
Energy tanks = Hart Peices
Varia, gravity suit = red, blue, green tunic
Ice, wave, plasma, hyper beam = Ice, fire, light arrow

Thats nonsense ... If you will look closely you will see that those stuff you mentioned are a base thing in every game: fire, ice, wind worlds/powers. Black and white, good and evil...You can say the same thing about Metroid Prime and Mario64 ....

you missed my point completly. Look at the gameplay mechanics. Both of them have the "just-out-of-reach -item -that- you -need- to- come -back- latter -to- reach" gameplay. I'm telling you they are exactly the same.

Like what? The only other game I can think of that is similar is Castlevania: Symphny of the Night

Yes, they might have that in common, but it is pure coincidence. A lot of other games do have some similarities with them.

Actually bamax is right. Zelda was the first game to do things beyond stage 1, stage 2, stage 3, etc and a lot of games have been like that.
Other than Metroid
Soul Reaver
Eternal Darkness
Mario 64
Banjo-Kazooie
Donkey Kong 64
Final Fantasy
Ape-Escape
I think the credit should go to Gary Gygax. Hes the father of RPGs. Its not hard to point out that FF came from D&D.

Metroid I - Released 1984
Zelda I - Released 1987
Zelda is actually inspired by Metroid. Not the other way around.

Actually its doesnt really matter. Both Mario and Zelda (and maybe Metroid aswell, though I dont know lots of titles with this kind of gameplay in the Nes and Snes days) put a stanart for those days platform and Action-Adventure games .. and it actually play a role till nowadays.
So in the end, my point is .. that if you look on the basic of every game, put out the story line, the music, the graphics ... and stay with the main target you will see they are all have something in common (save the princess/the plant/the world ... just save someone for god sake!#!$$&%$@&)

I do not think they're based off of each other in any way. The coincidentally share many elements but the gameplay is much different than you're inferring. Many games are based off of the same principles as bamax has said as well.

Now that you say this, I find it interesting how similar the post-Super Metroid and GBA Castlevania games are...especially the map screens. They are exactly the same. Anyone else notice this?

I was going to make a thread about this but i'm lazy.
The only similarity is that you have to find like do 3 things. 3 power sources, 3 keys, etc.

Everyone who has ever playd Metroid and the newer Castelvania game should have noticed it.
It's blatently obvious.

I don't think so. That is like saying that Super Mario Bros. 3 is the same as Donkey Kong Country. Metroid and Zelda may have a little bit of similarities, however, I are in no way that similar. Games are always going to have a little bit of similar stuff. Halo and Perfect Dark, Jak and Dexter and Mario 64, etc.

I think Halo was 'inspired' by Metroid.

Nah! I think Halo was inspired by Starcraft.
Marines and Spartan = Terran (Ballistic Weapons, Armor etc)
Covenant = Protoss (Energical weapons*cough*plasma sword*cough*,energical shield, etc)
Fludd = Zerg (more organic, etc)

I was thinking the exact same thing while playing MP2. Another similarity is how when you solve a puzzle or something theres a standard chime to let you know you reached an objective.

In which ways?
well, both have suits. both have visors, which is kinda more specific. no one really knows what they look like, or in samus's case if she even exists, which gives them an air of mystery in the games. both are genetically modified humans things. (master chief isnt a human or sumin, but u know what i mean). etc. when i remember the others ill tell u

Yes, they are similar. They do have similar core gameplay.
However, this is to be expected. There are only so many different types of core gameplay that a developer could come up with. Besides, while they are similar in their core, they are both executed so vastly differently.
The main difference lies in the character interaction. Zelda has a lot more people to interact with, whereas Metroid is a more isolated experience.
To say they are similar because they both require extensive exploration is pretty a redundant statement - it's a hallmark of the genre.
And the Fire, Ice and Light idea is also pretty redundant, because they both would have gotten inspiration from literature outside of gaming. It's not like these ideas were born with video games.

That is true that in Zelda you have a lot more things to interact with and Metroid is isolated. That is why I wonder if they did make a Metroid movie, how would they present it if it is just with one actress. And then you don't really see her face in the first place.

I see some similaritys
Although I think it was just nintendo really experimenting the full potential of games. That you could have stories and such. They both take elements from choose your own story books (if you have the candle turn to page 53 if you dont go to page 22) and those old text adventure games.
