View Full Version : So, E-mpire... Who "won"?

To me, this was one of the worst E3s ever. All keynotes were mostly boring, yet everyone had something I was interested in. Accumulating the things I cared most about, I concluded that EA won.

DISCLAIMER: ME = PC and PS3 gamer. Nothing else!

EA because they showed the most interesting games to us. Mass Effect 3, Need for Speed 323, Battlefield 3... it was impressive.

Followed by Sony, but this is... not impressive at all. I was impressed by Uncharted 3, and I am happy to be able to play it in 3D later this year. Sly4 is cool too. The rest? Not so much.

The rest is awash. Nintendo... cannot comment. Their games don't interest me at all. Wii U (worst name in gaming history ever) looks good, but they gave us basically no info, and the gameplay footage, save for Zelda, was PS360 footage (confirmed by Reggie himself). Ubisoft... well Assassin's Creed Revelations on PS3 looked very good. I just hope the PC version won't be delayed a week before release yet again. Plus, as with Mass Effect, the ports suck... maybe they put a LITTLE more effort into these games. Microsoft... Tomb Raider looks wicked.

My conclusions overall is... NO MORE CG TRAILERS PLEASE.

of the "big 3", nintendo. and only because they showed a new console. even then, it was a very weak conference from them. it's the first time i've seen a new console unveiled that was more powerful than the others on the market that left me underwhelmed. They didn't even communicate well enough that it wasn't just a new controller, and left the entire crowd scratching their heads.

Sony came very close to second place. NGP was shown to be a much more interesting system than Wii U. They showed real games for it, games that couldn't be done on any comparable device. A true next generation step, unlike Wii U's "PS3.5" approach they seem to be taking (I think that's a mistake, but we'll see). This of course was watered down big time by them having revealed it before, so it didn't have much impact this time. All in all, I'd have to say as far as announcements go Sony did win, but Nintendo generated the most hype.

MS... don't even get me started. That was the worst conference since 2006.

I'll tell you one thing, Wii U will not sell as well as Wii did. The screen controller is prohibitive with it's price, and has nowhere near the novelty factor as motion control did.

well to be honest all 3 were a disappointment to me

MS prolly the worst of the 3 i'm getting sick and tired of fps games how much longer can they go on milking the halo franchise the series has sucked since halo 2 nuff said kinect lol just lol starwars looked like trash and sesemestreet jeezus ms promised that kinect would be catered for the hardcore there wasn't a single hardcore kinect game announced their attitude to kinect to me is if you haven't bought it yet maybe you shouldn't bother atall

Sony Great showing but as again too much focus on motion and 3D the ps branded TV does look nice but why only 24 inch and most of their big game announcements were games we seen already though uncharted looks amazing and the $250 price for the vita is a good move there was no new ip's that really excited or interested me

nintendo wii u lol at the name not much to go by with the system but that controller looks awful too big and analogue sticks on th top of the buttons no doubt it will be a game changer and a big success but me as a gamer i'm not convinced by it just yet. Also i think N are rushing it a bit too early wii is only 5 yrs old and has a bigger audience than the ps3 or 360 it stales may have gone stale but it still has a lot of life left yet and is wii u their true next gen system that will compete with ps4 and x720 or is it just a bridge the gap until then

Nintendo has the most hype for me, so as far as E3 goes--that's the winner...Controller has a lot of potential, and I use PS3 as a media center almost as much as a game console, so things like the web browser on Wii-U are very appealing.

Second up is Sony, but in all honesty, if they didn't show Starhawk and reveal Vita only a few days ago, they likely would've had the best show. I don't quite understand releasing all the info before E3 if that's the games you are going to be talking about, but whatever:shrug: the hype wasn't there, but the games man...I'm getting a lot of Sony stuff this year and next, so as far as content go, they are still the winner.

EA's games were top notch, so they are kinda tied up with Sony as far as quality, but I'm only really interested in ME3, not really hyped about another Shooter, not matter how awesome it looks.

MS was all just kinect as far as exclusives go, and since I'm over Gears, not much else left to discuss. Can't even say it sux, it just wasn't interesting. And as far a getting new customers for kinect not sure how good of a job they are doing, but didn't move me to get one.

None of them won, I rather choose UBIsoft or EA, they all bored me to death, PSV price is great but am not into hand held gaming, Wii U (shiiitty name) didn't show enough to impress me, that controller is F N huge and ugly they need a redesign that PoS, Microsoft was pathetic, even there Halo 4 announcement did nothing for me, Kinect Stars Wars was a joke, Kinect showing was very weak... all in all it was a very, very, very weak E3 from the big 3...

I think Nintendo won because Wii U has a lot of potential and they did a good job of showing that with the Tech demos. They did leave us with some questions, which isn't bad as long as they answer those in a timely matter.

Chris

None of the keynotes were paced well, all bland, in my opinion. The best if we're going beyond the console manufacturers, I'm in agreeance with you Segitz, was EA. ME3, BF3, I'm pretty pumped.

I think Nintendo had the opportunity to blow people away and just completely whiffed. Zero gameplay footage, didn't give any great example of how the controller could be used, and as you said, made NO mention of the fact that there was a console attached to that controller, just silly. I think the controller shows promise, but I want to see how they work it into actual games and not just minigames and sports games.

And Wii U...come on Nintendo, you're killing me. Wii was bad enough, first thing that came to mind when he said it, after the white rage of course, "Wii U pway with me?"

The big 3 all dropped their respective balls in some fashion or other. Of the 3, Nintendo takes it on potential alone. Trying to cover DS, 3DS, Wii and Wii U in under 2 hours is just asking to leave out too much. I grasped the concepts of Wii U right away but I can see how a lot of people were instantly confused by it. Not the greatest job explaining things. But this is also why they are holding 2 roundtables this week (one last night for 1st party and 1 tonight for 3rd party).

I didn't get a chance to actually watch any 3rd party conferences but I've heard great things about EA's conference and Ubisoft was supposedly alright as well. At least Konami's wasn't as Extweeeeeeem as last year.

So who won? 3rd parties won. Between having solid conferences and Nintendo giving them a 3rd option at home console to amortize costs and exploit sales, 3rd parties won.

LaLiLuLeLo

Nintendo because of the new console and controller (but nothing to get excited about if you already own a PS3 or 360, since the whole draw is that you can finally play 3rd party X-platform games on it). This E3 was kinda lame. 3rd Parties had the best showing. Out of the big 3, it was like landing on the zero in Yahtzee; everyone fucking loses.

Yeah, bit sh*te wasn't it. Nintendo won because for the first time in 6 years or so I give a flying f**k about a nintendo console... Excuse the swearing my dog now has no teeth because my idiot of a wife has been feeding him cheese and chocolate and I'm not in the best of moods... If this was the middle east I could just say "I divorce you" three times.

Didn't know about Luigi's Mansion 2, would like to play, think it's ideal for 3D, extra spooky. The controller for Wii U... Vita.. Wii U, can't anyone come up with a decent name anymore... Well I like that a lot because I can play real console quality games in bed now with that controller, I'm in bluetooth range of my games room, very nice. Actually I can with Vita too. Wii U looked decent, I would have liked it to tear 360 and PS3 several new ones, I'm guessing it's slightly better than PS3/360 but I've little to base this on except blind faith. But Zelda in 360/PS3 vision, oh f**k yeah son. 6 years too late but still, good things come to those who wait my child. But it's never about the +/- 10%, it's about having graphics in the right ball park, then delivering the gameplay and atmosphere. So Nintendo have real hardware now, until Sony/Microsoft give them a kicking in a year or.... 4.

And the thing about Nintendo is you can still play all this stuff on the couch. I like that. I play these games to escape the stress of my wife life. Really I do. Not for exercise. That's what gyms for for. Exercise for me needs resistance you see. Weights, machines...

So yeah, Nintendo win. Then Sony, just with the Vita. Right console, right price. I was honestly thinking it would cost $499 or something dumb like that. If it was a smartphone it would. Sony conference was useless, half of it seemed missing. It ended and I was like... And the big suprise is....? Huh!?! Where's Agent, Team Ico? PSP ports to PS3, desperate much? Where's a little smell of PS4. It's a Sony that's received a kicking. Then EA. Then Konami. Don't think I've missed anyone out. :)

Only kidding.... Microsoft. Gears 3 looking just as good as you'd expect, very meh demo. Wasn't looking at it going "Oh wow Unreal 3 engine does errmm.... meat spheres now". So it's Halo 4 but not by Bungie... You know it could suck right? Then lots of Kinect garbage. Kinect is so lame it actually made Wii cool again. It's like how that annoying "Friday Friday" song makes Katy Perry sound like Mozart.

Kojima prattling on about what the hell? Transceivership, Transferring, Transsub... Oh shut up you geek, put together a cloud based service, your idea sucks. How about you roll up the sleeves of your greentribe shirt and give is ZOE 3. Four eyed git. Nobody wants to transfer game saves, we want it done automatically through the cloud. Nob head.

Who else pissed me off... Peter Moore is an ugly ugly man with very boring games. Bet you're sorry about the tattoos now f**er. I think Ghost Recon Future counts as an ugly game now, the standards are so high. So yeah, I think I'm a bit glad I've switched hobbies really.

---------- Post added at 06:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:08 PM ----------

What else... Wii U with 25GB for games on a disk, big bucket of win. You need this. Very pleased about that.

Nintendo they won. Go buy a Wii U. That is all.

Segitz

From what Giantbomb says, Ghost Recon Future Soldier apparently SUCKS^^ I didn't expect that.

For me for Vita to succeed, Sony has to ship every game that is available for both consoles in the same package. Just the PS3 disc with a download code. NOBODY buys two copies of a game. That would make Vita THE defacto handheld console, if the integration with PS3/4 can be perfected.

BahnNZ
06-09-2011, 10:47 AM
Heard some people wowing over Ghost Recon Future Soldier, haven't a clue why. I don't think it's really going to pull people off their COD and Halo.

Vita just seems like the perfect handheld, really want that to succeed. It doesn't suffer from the PSP disease of being "half a PS2 in your pocket". It can do so much that a standard PS3 can't do, i.e. GPS, Touch controls, cameras etc. So it's games can differentiate themselves from PS3 games, give a different experience.

I have great hopes. Vita Strong!

Hmm for me I enjoyed the PS one the most, Nintendo second, and don't own a MS console to be concerned about the conference so much, but what i saw was bad. Seseme Street? But really the console/controller reveal for Nin just felt lacking of energy and excitement to me for a big event like this, and wasn't explained well, more focus should of been on it. Just couldn't get interested about it while watching, saw hmm PS360 bit sharper graphics and nice controller interaction.end. and lots of sequels during conference. Zelda on WiiU tech demo looks nice mind as I never played one but thats about it.

I'm a tech nut though and SONY presented stuff that excites me like the split 3D TV which is cheap. VITA at a great price(actually buy one of those this time) which does everything I want from a portable. Not sure why everyone moans at the 24" screen size on the 3DTV, I've got a monitor that size, it's big enough, and my room HDTV is only 26". A few more game annoucements would of been nice, true, like LG, more on Twisted Metal. But overall I was happy.

the fact that we know Sony has more games but didn't talk about them is hilarious...honestly, I don't know what the heck they were doing, they have to know the majority of people that watch E3 online are forum guys/gals and people that visit game sites. We knew about EVERY game in the conference. They seriously should have told the Starhawk team to reveal at E3.

Nintendo showed loads of potential, but Vita is sick--I don't care what the haters say about the name or about PS3 ports being shown, that's the real star of E3 IMO, it only needs the content from 3rd parties and it'll be the one of the best consoles ever, from a design standpoint, and the online integration, I think Sony nailed it.

Nintendo nailed the idea for Wii-U as well, I just don't know if the design is quite up to par, but its screaming with potential right now. What's really up in the air for Nintendo IMO, is the graphical capabilities of the system. It doesn't need to be slightly better than HD consoles, every game needs to look like that Zelda demo, and that needs to be first gen titles. Go for broke on graphical capabilities Ninty, because I have to admit, without the 3D turned on, the 3DS games reel looked awfully outdated. I actually don't want 3rd parties to start putting all there unique/RPG/action RPG games on that system man, Vita is just a better platform. So hopefully, the Wii-U isn't the same deal as 3DS and Ninty goes all out. They made enough money this gen to bleed a little cash into a good CPU/GPU

So hopefully we see the professor Laytons and Dragon Quest games make the shift, Sony needs to push for those types of games on Vita.

i'm honestly surprised that nobody here mentioned the "onlive" service/console/tablets/etc. it was there too. and honestly. i think they won. because they showed off the most. they 1up'd everyone with everything.

MS=cloud storage Onlive=cloud storage+cloud gaming
PS=Vita Onlive= Android/IOS Tablets(touch compatible games also)/pc/tv/smartphone/bluray players/etc..+ Universal controller for all
N= Pii U controller screen making a somewhat smaller tv(which has been done on accessories since ps2) Onlive= Tablets capable of transferring from tv to tablet/cellphone/work computer and still gaming while on the go not being tied to the home console.

i vote for onlive. they're small but everything that they are bringing to the table RIGHT NOW is what the big 3 are bringing later and next year for seperate pricing(for cheaper) and seperate consoles. onlive is bringing it all together as 1.

Yes, we know that. This was done simply because video of those games running on Wii U don't exist yet. Besides, the majority of ALL early video and screens of multiplatform games come from 1 console despite being labelled as coming from several. This is far, far more common than you think.

Yeah. None of the big three actually won. If I have to choose a winner it has to be Nintendo, thanks to the new WiiU. Next year it should be more interesting if MS and Sony unveil their next gen consoles. And even then if most of the supposed surprises leaks or are released before the actual event (which has been the trend now days) it will steal quit a bit of it's thunder.

Also I don't know if this deserves it's own thread or not, but here is my picks for "Best of E3" from what I have seen:

1. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
2. Bioshock Infinite
3. Battlefield 3
4. Wii U
5. PS Vita
6. Gears of War 3
7. Tomb Raider
8. Kinect Star Wars
9. Mass Effect 3
10. Rayman Origins

I think out of those 10 Bioshock and Skyrim by far take the cake. Both of those games look fucking nuts.

When Sony does not show one bar chart folks still complain. i thought they had the best outing, because they got straight to it and did not slow down. WiiU 'showed' potential but not during the conference, if they showed at least one actual game I would have said they won.

Vita could do all that stuff thet Wii-mote can do. One of the bosses at Sony even said so. Hell when my exitement at seeing nintendo's new console died down, i started to compare even before they started comparing.

Well... Sony showed NOTHING we didn't already know, basically. Uncharted 3... twice (although awesome), Resistance 3... and several PSVita games. It wasn't that interesting for GAMERS. It was nice to see new hardware, yes... but not much. Nintendo had a MUCH better showing in that (at least for people who like their games). Microsoft was the same... they showed "old" stuff and Kinect... that was basically it.

I hope, for Sonys sake, that they don't repeat their previous GC keynotes... meaning focusing EXTREMELY on casual crap nobody (that watches these keynotes) cares for.

- I would have to go with Square having the best games in first place even though they didnt have a conference. Tomb Raider, Hitman, Dungeon Siege, Deus X and FFXIII-2 are all day one.

- EA with a great showing also including ME3, Battlefield, Kingdoms of Amalur, Overstrike and FIFA which all looks good.

- Sony in third place. Vita is the portable of my dreams! Uncharted, Golden Abyss, Resistance and Starhawk all look great. New IP's like Ruin, Gravity and Dust looked interesting. All in all a decent conference for me.

- Nintendo announcing a console i can actually get behind was good news for me. Unfortunately it only looks like potential that will be realized 2 years from now and unfortunately they did a bang up job of confusing everyone. The more i see with every showing the more i feel less interest in 3DS. All in all a poor conference saved by a potentially awesome new console.

- Ubisoft announced some interesting stuff with Far Cry 3 and im holding thumbs for Tin Tin. Assassins Creed looks stunning so all in all an average conference.

- MS had Gears to interest me. The Kinect stuff all looked laggy or stupid when implemented in core games. Fun Labs looked cool and cloud storage was a great announcement. All in all the worst MS conference ive seen. I miss the days when they were announcing new exclusives like Bioshock and Mass Effect. I hope that old MS comes back soon.

- In last place Activision. Wow this company is just going down hill for me. They might aswell have not shown up since MS did all the COD marketing for them. The rest of their lineup with the exception of Spiderman looks really really poor.

Best games of the show for me were Mass Effect 3, Uncharted 3 and Bioshock Infinite.

You see i cant really count them in anything Activision does because they isolate themselves with PC development. They can release another 100 sequels for those games but myself and millions of others will not care till those games are released on console. Blizzard are insignificant to console gamers and we all know console gamers rule the world. Im pretty sure Bobby Kotick will do everything in his power to get those games on next gen consoles as COD starts to slow down in years to come but until then Blizzard dont matter.

I also think Bioshock and Skyrim were awesome, but my personal favorite was Mass Effect 3.

As far as potential goes, I'm actually quite a bit more excited by Vita than Wii-U simply because of my gaming preference. I'm a fighting game fan and hardcore RPG fan. With so many of the good RPG's now going to portable devices, devs being excited to work on Vita sounds like a dream console to me. On top of that, the graphical specs won't hinder devs to cut corners with developing RPG's, and you can get the full console like experience on Vita, along with two analogs and touch-based controls.

I would be just as excited for that potential to be realized on Wii-U, but the wish-washy conference didn't do enough to convince me. Still, it's very possible that the Wii-U RPG experience could be a unique one, just like the Vita, and that's a good thing.

So, I don't really know why people say this E3 sucked, it just didn't have a lot of surprises. But, are good games coming? Yup...a lot of em too...

Well we werent really talking about sales but who impressed most at E3. Blizzard didnt pitch up so whether we agree or not on their relevance the point is they were not at E3. If we had to choose a company who has tons of great games and hardware coming out but only showed half their hand then Sony would be king every year. The question is who pitched up and who showed the best stuff and in my opinion it was Square Enix, EA and Sony in that order.
