Could be false, but apparently some sites are claiming a leak from activision about an E3 announcement of a remake of GoldenEye exclusively for Wii/DS.

http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=125721

I thought waiting 12 years for a StarCraft sequel was bad, but it turns out we've actually been waiting 13 years for a GoldenEye remake, and we didn't even know it was coming. Many companies have wanted to remake the game, and everybody else has wanted to play it, but it's always been held up by red tape. The James Bond License was bought by Electronic Arts in 1999, and then by Activision in 2007. However, the original GoldenEye 007 game for the Nintendo 64 was owned by Nintendo and Rare, and Rare is now owned by Microsoft, leading to a tragic custody battle over the years. Microsoft wouldn't let Nintendo re-release the original on the Wii's Virtual Console, and Nintendo wouldn't let Rare remake it for the 360's XBLA. Now we know why. Activision has their own remake ready, and it's exclusively for Nintendo's Wii and DS systems.

GoNintendo received an anonymous tip about a leaked Activision survey, with pictures of two covers for a Wii game, a golden Classic Controller, and a new Wii Zapper modeled after the infamous Golden Gun. It also had this tasty quote, revealing that the game will have improved graphics and physics, 8 player online multiplayer, and Daniel Craig will be replacing Pierce Brosnan:

"GoldenEye for the Nintendo 64 was a game that defined a genre. Now, after 13 years of gaming innovation, the legend is re-imagined. Developed from the ground up for the Wii, GoldenEye takes advantage of the latest technology to deliver the same intense experience with today's graphics and physics. Play a modernized version of the classic story with the new Bond (Daniel Craig), more lethal and cunning than ever as you take on missions around the world. Relive all the legendary moments from the original game: St Petersburg, the Caribbean and numerous other levels. Leverage the classic arsenal of weapons and gadgets as you fight Onatopp, Trevelyan and their adversaries, from the classic PP7 to the high tech assault rifle, sniper rifles and even the tank. The enhanced multiplayer experience offers 4 player split-screen like the original and introduces 8 player online matches. GoldenEye is 13 years better, are you?"

But that's not all. Then Eurogamer got their own anonymous tip, learning that the game is about to be announced at E3 and will be released in November. It is being co-developed by the UK-based Eurocom and the US-based n-Space. Eurocom previously worked on another Nintendo 64 Bond game, The World Is Not Enough, and n-Space has worked on some Duke Nukem titles, Geist, and the DS Call of Duty games. We'll have to wait until E3's official announcement, but I think we can assume that Eurocom will be developing the Wii title while n-Space develops the DS title.

I'm not sure how I feel about Daniel Craig sneaking into my pre-Craig Bond games, but then again Casino Royale was a remake of Bond's first adventure so maybe that makes GoldenEye post-Craig Bond? I'm not sure. Either way it's not that important, since Pierce Brosnan never fought Oddjob or Mayday, and it was still great fun in the 1997 game.

Like all late 90's attempts at photorealistic humans and environments, the graphics did age rather poorly over the years. But the gameplay was as solid as they come, and very deserving of a facelift with today's technology. It will be interesting to see how the younger generation of FPS gamers, those who grew up on franchises like Halo and Call of Duty, react to the grandaddy of console FPS games making its triumphant return. It was the best-selling FPS on a home console for 7 years after all, until Halo 2 took its crown. And it's still frequently referred to as the greatest game adaptation of a film ever made.

Personally, I can't wait to see the game's DK and paintball modes with today's graphics, or how many enemies they'll fit on the screen when a security alarm goes off. Klobbs in the Caverns anyone? RCP-90s in the Facility? Rocket launchers in the basement? 1 on 1, Aztec, Slappers Only? Speedruns of the Facility level are going to be all the rage, again.

That would be awesome (Goldeneye Source is pretty sweet), but way for them to not know the difference between the golden gun and the klobb, if those pictures are even accurate, which would all rely on the validity of the rumor as well.

well...

I guess it would be cool.....but I am afraid it just won't be the same the second time around....

also.... It would be better it the Wii was HD.....just sayin'

I don't think this market has any desire for a full priced Goldeye remake honestly. As an updated downloadable title like the new Perfect Dark on XBLA, sure, perfect setting. But when this game actually comes out I feel it will not be as good and go a long way to tarnishing the great name of Goldeye.

I'm with Patcher on this one: http://wii.kombo.com/article.php?artid=15886

Releasing ANY hardcore game on the Wii is an act of futility, even for Nintendo franchises (albeit slightly less so for them).

i like it. looking forward to finding out more at Nintendo's conference. i can't imagine Nintendo passing on showing off that they have this exclusively.

contract probably forces them to use Daniel Craig. though i do hope they have all the Bond's available in multiplayer.

That would be nice, and each Bond could have a different one-liner or two. At least they aren't making a straight port. They're actually going out and making this game look like a 2010 Wii game. I'll give them that. The single-player, let's be honest, needs an update anyway. Half of the single-player missions in the original were junk.

good news. i really want this game. everytime i go back to play the original i cry because the controls just suck. i'm not a big fan of dual analog (it works but just annoys men). so playing with single analog was torture. it worked great back then but just doesn't feel good anymore.

now that it will be using Wii remote i'm going to be able to enjoy it all over again.

Absolutely. It's a full scale FPS with a major online focus. That first trailer I saw on the Internet a few days ago made it look like a WiiWare game. Seeing it in person made me change that assumption immediately.

^I see what you did thar

Craptivision would have been roflier but I digress. Hopefully this game will fix some of the balance issues with the original. Proxy mines could shut down so many areas with no way past them and as awesome as Facility was back in the day, it lacks the flow of most of todays multiplayer levels. If they updated the maps and tweaked some weapon properties, this game will far surpass the original.

Here is why I could care less about the game. Does anyone remember when EA tried to bank off the Goldeneye name with Rouge Agent? Same deal here just different people doing it. This would be like if Halo or Mario got sold to another company or somehow and they took the most successful of them and just remade it with the same name. They should have just made it a Virtual Console and XBLA title when they could have a few years back instead of scrapping that. Would have been cheaper for them, and better for gamers.

GoldenEye 007 'Classic Edition' detailed (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=259580)

http://cdn.medialib.computerandvideogames.com/screens/screenshot_235786.jpg

Activision's partnered with Nintendo for a Limited Edition Controller Bundle for GoldenEye on Wii.

The bundle will include an exclusive gold Classic Controller Pro, apparently inspired by Francisco Scaramanga's infamous golden gun.

The controller does have a more practical application too (apart from looking glamorous) as it allows players to use a more traditional control scheme as opposed to the Wii Remote and Nunchuk control scheme.

GoldenEye 007 executive producer Julian Widdows recently said his team has something to prove with the remake and is pushing the Wii "incredibly hard".

GoldenEye 007 is one of two upcoming Bond games, the game is going head to head with the Bizzare Creations title, James Bond: Blood Stone.

Check out our recent interview with Bizarre about Blood Stone - the Bond game with everything.

I might be wrong on this but I think this will be the first FPS that allows for a mix of Wii controls and traditional controls. Will settle that debate on which is the better input method once and for all.

While I like that golden CCPro, I'll stick with the Wii controls.

I have played and finished Goldeneye's single player. Some thoughts:

Updating Goldeneye's story to 2010 was a smart idea because it would have been anachronistic. To their credit, they do a good job bringing Goldeneye to the present day with a terrorist theme and also staying generally true. There are some notable changes to the story and the order in which things happen, but the story is at least natural in its approach. Some of the motives remain a bit vague and there isn't much chemistry between Bond and Natalya this time around, but that has more to do with the way the story turns out than it has to do with the actors and their performances. Trevelyan isn't particularly intimidating, either, but he wasn't really that in the film, either. Part of the fun I had was seeing the changes and doing a little compare/contrast. Apples and oranges, but at least they didn't skimp on this like they could have. Helps that Goldeneye's writer, Bruce Feirstein, wrote the script for this game.

The level design, too, takes more than a few cues from the original Goldeneye, but it isn't enslaved or beholden to them. In many ways, they've been redesigned and retrofitted to give it a fresh look. The levels are also longer, too. Much longer. There are, I'd say, fifteen levels in the game, and just about all of them will take 15-20 minutes, and that's if you're a seasoned vet.

The gameplay isn't perfect, but the action is brutal and intense and the controls work surprisingly well. There are some framerate issues here and there and some minor hit detection quibbles, but from a gameplay standpoint this is the best Bond has looked since Everything or Nothing in 2004.

Top to bottom, I'd say the single-player is better in this iteration than in the previous one. That may sound like blasphemy, but it's the sad truth. Goldeneye's single-player in 1997 wasn't particularly remarkable even then. It had its moments, certainly, but on the whole it was kinda bland. True to the movie, certainly, but it had its yawns. Goldeneye for 2010 goes its own way and still has the flavor of the original. At least on this front, Goldeneye is worth the money.

Also, if you don't like the regenerating health trick, you can always play 007 classic. Be forewarned: It is very difficult.

just finished the first level and i'm in love with the franchise all over again. it's similarities feed my nostalgia while the differences make it feel fresh and exciting. i'm getting psyched to play more. if only i had more time to play right now. hopefully in a few hours i can spend a decent amount of time with it.

Having sunk my teeth into both the single and multi-player I'd give it a low 3.5/4. It has its share of flaws and minor hiccups, but the overall experience and replay value help carry the new Goldeneye to a prominence not many of us thought it would achieve. Better still, it manages to stand on its own as its own game and not just a "remake," much in the way the GCN version of Resident Evil in 2002 did.
