Xbox Evolved Halo 2 Send Off

As everyone knows, Halo 2 and original Xbox LIVE service is being shut down today. I'll be playing Halo 2 for the majority of the day as well as Bungie developers from 6-11 PM PST. Players who play Halo 2 today will also get a special bonus in Halo Reach (provided the same GT they play Halo 2 on is the same GT they'll play on Reach).

xbox, you pioneered proper online gaming with consoles. you gave birth to the best online service to ever grace a console. you've hosted some amazing games. fare thee well. now just hope your parents learn that you can still charge money for those additional features without charging for the ability to play the game online at all...

ok, anyway... this marks the official *death* of the xbox. the true point where MS ceased to support it. not a bad run really, especially when you consider the majority of ps2 titles to be released after xbox was killed off (hardware and software wise) were crap. when you've only sold 30 million boxes, and lost 7 billion, it would be stupid to try to keep investing in new games for it, especially once it showed that it's sales were dwindling and the other guys were already hard at work on the next generation. it's respectable that they didn't cut XBL off with it once 360 got going good, and waited a bit first. but now we've reached a point where live is restricted by the box, so it's time has come.

makes you wonder what other updates, other than having more than 100 friends, will be in store.

I always think this kinda thing sucks.... why cant more games use the "whoever is playing is basically a host" kinda of system so games that are decades old can still be experienced endlessly...

I hate how... for example.... almost ALL EA games use the dedicated EA servers that eventually get shut down only a couple of years after launch.... bull!!!!

I totally didn't get a chance to play Halo 2 yesterday (flew into Dallas and got back this morning). I hear reports that it is still up - for now. You may have some time to get that last minute game in.

As for the bonus in Halo Reach...
1. If you have any Halo 2 games recorded on Bungie.net. This will allow you to activate a veterancy emblem for the pregame lobbies in Halo: Reach for that gamertag.

2. Bungie will be playing Halo 2 on the 14th. Play any game (does not have to be against Bungie) on the 14th and you will recieve "a graphical flair for Reach multiplayer". We're thinking a special armor piece.

Not sure if playing today counts for #2, but it's worth a shot.
