i was just playing GT5p and got the dreaded infanate polygon glitch... ( has been linked to yellow light of death syndone)
could 3 years of nonstop gaming/movies/music/F@H finaly be hurting my beloved lanch unit?
i have close to 16,000 hours runtime...

This is why I sold my launch units early, so I got a new one with fresh warranty etc.^^ Because I knew it would die sooner or later (well, it still works, says my buyer^^)
Still, my condolences

Flog it on eBay as a BC launch unit, buy yourself a slim with some of the proceeds, then put the remainder towards a hooker. Problem solved.

I had that a while back with my launch 20GB system. For me it started on RE5, then spread to just about every game. It was odd, some games were perfect except one tiny thing here or there, but was otherwise fine.
If it is anything like mine, it should hobble along and get slowly worse in the next 4 months. Eventually, mine completely locked up and refused to turn on at all. I did open mine up and re-apply thermal paste, then tightened the retention flaps on it hoping that would help but.. no such luck, it only helped it a little. cooling it even more did nothing. On the bright side though, I did send it in and they returned my original unit, fixed, with a fast turn around.
Oddly enough, it was in a new case. The plastic was brand new on the outside, same guts though. It also is a little louder and the fan ramps up quicker to high. I'm pondering getting a slim and using the fatty just for BC and rock band and demon's souls since they locked those saves and they won't transfer (Grrrr).

Folding killed my GPU (I think). I ran that program for a year straight (never turning off the system), and I got the polygon stretch problem in Assassin's Creed and The Orange Box. Since getting my refurb unit, I've only seen one odd polygon, and that was in Tomb Raider, so it's difficult to know whether that was a GPU problem or a game bug.
If you can, start backing up your game saves. While your HDD should be fine, you can't be too careful once the system starts to go...
It might have been an odd occurrence, or it may be the first syndrome. Nothing to worry about yet before it happens again, but backing up your game saves is always a good idea. I always do no matter what.
My PAL launch system is still going strong, BTW.

Slim it down, baby. You're putting on too much weight. I can see your polygons even when you wear big shirts.:P

It probably is the folding@Home app doing it. Because my original PS3 died while folding.
I did a fair amount of folding on mine too.
what a scary thread... there should be like warning or something.

This is why I'm glad I didn't buy at launch.
That said, I have a BC Compatible 80gb fat. Am I at risk for deadly CPU cancer?

Yes.
I have a European Launch model and so far no problems, but this could change soon.
I dont regret it though. 8)

sell it while it still has legs and buy a slim or hold onto it and HOPE it doesn't die altogether... it's your choice

Ha, i know how you feel.
But you can keep it even if it dies, not like a pet (would stink after a while).

can always use it as a very expensive slick doorstop or a paperweight thats all my jap launch ps3 is good for now funny as gt5 p killed mine also
I'll take mine tomorrow to a garage to shoot it with pressurized air. I never dusted it from the inside since I bought it. It scared me yesterday as it suddenly froze on me, then a few hours later, it just blanked then a few seconds later the XMB main screen appeared without a full re-start.
