View Full Version : Lack of RPGs

Why is there a lack of RPGs on the GCN, whereas PS2 and XBOX have a whole stream of RPGs out and on their way. I know there are some coming out soon, but what about now? Didnt Squaresoft come back from hiatus with Nintendo. I'm definitely looking forward to some FF games on the GBA too. A Super Mario RPG port would be awesome. Anyone know what Nintendo is thinking?

Square and Nintendo are utilizing Hiroshi Yamauchi's "Q Fund" to make Final Fantasy games without pissing off Sony. I doubt Nintendo will ever have the RPG genre represented as well as they did witht the SNES. Unless they get out sequels to Earthbound and Mario RPG soon!

You're right! I dont think any system for a long time will be able to top the quality of RPGs on SNES.
Im curious though, how did this Square and Nintendo hiatus begin? Was it because Square left Nintendo for Sony while developing FF7(which was a very good idea)? I remember seeing a screenshot of FF7 on the 64 and it looked horrible. Tell me otherwise of this isnt the case.

There are Japanese RPGs on Xbox? Where?
Anywho, they are coming, PS2 didn't get any good RPGs until last holiday season, give the developers time to make RPGs.
Current RPGs in production:
Brownie Brown's Untitled RPG
Namco's Untitled RPG
Another installment of Namco's "Tales" series
Camelot's Untitled RPG
Ports:
Skies of Arcadia
PSOe1&2 (Online RPG)
Evolution Worlds (Evolution 1 & 2)
I think there more but i can never remember them all, as you an see they are indevelopment. Not to mention Nintendo just might suprise us all by announcing another EarthBound, and I think theres a Fire Emblem game in the works (Strat RPG)
Nintendo & Square
Square wanted CDs. Nintendo said "Screw you". Square asked Sony if they could work for them. Sony said "SURE!" Sqaure left Nintendo.
Later: Square comes back to Nintendo. Says "Hey we want to make GameBoy Advanced games" Nintendo says "SCREW YOU"
Sony buys 20% of Square's stock, Square magically forgets they ever wanted to work with Nintendo
For a time at least. Suddenly "Fund Q" comes in the picture, and Square sets up a sub company named something like "Game Developers Studio" who make GBA games. Rumored they will make a GCN game for GBA-GCN link up, no FF on GCN confirmed.
Oh and the "FF7 on the N64" was a CGI tech demo of what the next FF game was going to look like (showing off FFVI characters in 3D). It was assumed it was going to be on N64 (Since Square always worked with Nintendo at the time) but later FFVII was announced for the Sony PlayStation.

:laugh heh
Anyway, Nintendo better make an Earthbound on GCN after evily cancelling it on N64. Well, hope its for the best.

Earthbound on GCN would be a godsend, I love that game.
RPG's may be scarce but just wait til all of the ones are announced (the ones that Uhkuc said like the Camelot RPG)
Also, I thought I remembered seeing some RPG's called Giftpia and Time of (something)

There's a list of the RPG's for the cube:
Camelot RPG
Evolution Worlds
Final Fantasy
Gift
Gold Star Mountain
Gothic
Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life
Lost Kingdoms (Rune)
Mage
Namco RPG
Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 & 2
Skies of Arcadia
Tales of Phantasia RPG
so it is not really a lack

Uh... how can a game be not unconfirmed if it was never confirmed? Your either one or other :p
And since it was never confirmed, then its unconfirmed.
Facts are facts.

I remember reading on FFOnline(good site, check it out) that FF Unlimited and an FF Puzzle game was a possiblity. Hey its not confirmed but its something to hope for.

Possiblities, Rumors, Heresay, Fantasies. When Square/GDS sits down and says "Okay, FF(insertsomethign here) is in development for GCN" THEN it will be confirmed, and a fact.

Your right about that one. I hope they make a GCN golden sun or earthbound those are my two favorite RPGs of all time.

Square/Game Developers Studio confirmed they are working on GBA (FFT [confirmed, release date], Parasite Eve [confirmed], even ports of CT and Seiken Densetsu were talked about [not confirmed (at least they mentioned the possiblity])
Square has mentioned they may or may not make a GCN game in the future that has GBA link up cababilities. However, right now they are focusing on GBA only.
An FF game was never mentioned for GCN.

So what's this? (http://cube.ign.com/articles/355/355167p1.html)

An old article, showing once again NOA is a crackhead. A few weeks later, Square confirmed all the information of which I spoke of. Do you see anywhere that Square confirmed FF for GCN in that article anyways? I sure dont. In fact it says Square USA couldn't deny or confirm anything at the time. Later on, Square (Japan) release official statements. I can find the link if you want.
Edit: Unfortunately due to GameSpot Complete locking out all their articles, I actually can NOT provide a link. I looks through IGN stuff and it seems that was the only article they ever posted about the subject. Lazy bastards.

I agree with the lazy bastards part. I am an IGN insider though, so if I can be of any help locating locked info just ask. I think the only reason Square hasn't confirmed anything yet is so Sony doesn't get pissed at them or cut them off just yet. The likelyhood that the GCN will see a FF game is very high, IMO.

I dont have an opinion on the subject (since I already own both PS2 and GCN, it doesn't matter)
However if they DO make a game (FF or whatever), I want it to be somethign besides a port of something I already own. Though FFXI would help Square promote its MMORPG, and get more people into the FFXI universe.
But until further notice, GBA is getting All of GDS's support, which is hardly a bad thing :)
I dont know what all the hype is about anyways, Square isn't EVERYTHING to RPGs.
Anywho thats all off topic kinda...
I'm really looking forward to what Namco has to off the GCN, Namco said they wanted their Untitled RPG to be a series as Big as their Xeno and Tales series. Now THAT sounds nice :)

Same here so i can get any FF game that comes out. Thats the main reason i got a GCN in addition to PS2.

It's sort of funny to complain about a lack of any one genre on Gamecube, since there is a lack from every solitary genre on Gamecube, right now. The number of games in virtually any category currently out for Gamecube could be counted on one hand, save for sports, maybe.

Yeah... but sports is the armpit of the video game genre body.
