I have played video games for as long as i can remember. I have seen a lot of games come out that have been way over hyped. The GTA series has taken the cake though. GTA 3 was a complete work of art, I wont deny that. GTA: Vice City was an innovative follow up. The new GTA sounds like it will have the same inovation as all of the other titles. What I dont understand though is why these games can possibly be compared to Zelda and Mario or Final Fantasy or Metriod. The first time you play through a Grand Theft Auto its just kickass. But the replay value is just non-existent. I got about half way through GTA: Vice City and was completly bored as hell with it. I went and traded it for KOTOR. So with the new GTA coming out Im waiting to see if the game gets another ten in the game magazines. No game deserves a ten if you cant play through it again with out passing out cause of boredom. What makes these games so good?

The replayability.
...seriously though, I really enjoyed Vice City for the first few months I've had it. It just got old once I beat it and collected everything, I would maybe play the PC version (mod it up) but I lost the disc..so much for that.

Replay value. Though...that needs a little work on.

I thought the shock factor was what made it popular in the beginning, but apparently there's more to it than that because it out lived the shock factor along time ago.

The fact that you can do anything you want, and its so open ended, that's what I would think.

Because if you're pissed you can take your anger out on people in the game.

It's all the immature people who think that playing a game that is rated M and has killing in it makes them mature.

It is much more then that. I hate the series, never really liked it, but I can't stand fanboy's taking such a stand on the game. Maybe it is popular because it is actually fun to people.

LOL, where to start. First of all, its the first realistic massive free roaming game. It actually makes you feel like your walking/driving through the city. You can enjoy this game for months without even completing a single mission! No time you play this game is exactly the same, theres always a new way to get away from the police. The missions (especially in the GTA3) really get you into the game. I've played this game 3 times though just to be able to go through the various missons/story levels again. I'll admit Vice City had a few low points (difficulty of some missions) but theres nothing bad you can possible say about GTA3. Im really looking forward to this new game, I'll probably take a couple weeks off work when it comes out. I cant remember ever being so excited about a video game since Orcana of time.

I've really never been into the GTA series. Though Dwhitten pointed out the PC versions to me before, so I got GTA3 to test it out. It's much more interesting and amusing on PC than it is on a console.
However... I don't think that is should be classified as a jaw-dropping game. The replayability on the systems aren't as good, it starts to become old. If you're in it for letting off some steam - then it's perfect. Other than that, sure you may encounter something new, but it still becomes repetitive.
Perhaps the missions should be a little more difficult. Up the originality, rather than have the same predictable outcomes that are apparent in the GTA series. Maybe those two factors could play a role in making the series more intriguing to play over again.
That's just my opinion though. :)

You cant tell me Vice City wasnt difficult, unless your using codes.

Damn, I forgot to mention the radio stations when your driving around, the 80's stations in Vice City were priceless!
Its so damned open ended and so damn unpredictable, and you can indulge in your inner fantasies, and what else have I left out............thats a good start.
Thats exactly why i like it. Theres so many different possibilities and options through the game.

The GTA series is great because it is multiple games in one. It has racing, driving, adventure, and action elements are bonded into one game(s). The freedom you have in the game is unprecendented and non-linear gameplay keeps replay value going for years on end.

The gta series arent games, they are pieces of heaven that have fallen into our console that are unworhty for us mere mortals...
freedom. the freedom rocks. and the fact the gameplay never stops. whilst you have to wait for other games to reload after getting game over, gta just drops you at the police station to punch the next cop and start all over again. the whole continous awesomeness.
and all the little things, like hidden packages, rampages, bouncing the ball on your head, street races and so on.
and wot virtual said.
they are the only mainstream games im proud to love.
and they give rockstar the money to make all their lesser-known awesome games like manhunt and that riot one

open-ended, non-linear, and ubber unpredictable action.
and you can do things in a realistic world that you can't do in your real life.

Wow. You are a complete moron. Non-existent replay value? The replay value is in NOT doing the missions smart guy.

I agree with all the reasons covered here but there is another one that no one has pointed out that I thoroughly enjoy. The open ended style of the game play means not everything can be totally polished and that combined with the physics engine equals.... Glitches! I love fucking around in wide open games like this because you can exploit crazy things that the developer didn't intend. Same deal with Mario 64 and all the banjo games and etc. Also busting out crazy tricks and wall rides and grinds with the bikes in Vice is the ultimate replay value addition.

No, your an asshole who cant respect others opinions. Im sorry if im someone who doesnt value that kind of replay factor. I myself got kinda bored after a while of driving around, shooting ppl, and doing stunts. So go screw yourself if you cant respect the fact that others just might think differently than you.
