I'M SICK OF READING THE WORD 'KIDDY'...
The reason is because people abuse it. According to these people...
Any game that does not feature extreme violence is called - KIDDY.
Any game that does not feature a thrash rock or menacing sounding music is called - KIDDY.
Any game that doesn't feature chicks with breasts that aren't big and bouncy is called - KIDDY.
Any game that is not laced with extreme cynacism is called - KIDDY.
And any game that is set in a magical or supernatural universe that is not justified as 'magicks' or 'advanced or alien technology' is called, you guessed it - KIDDY.
This is stems back to the N64/PSX days when the N64 got dubbed a 'kiddy console' because they had a glut of cute platformers and not enough serious racers, fighters and RPGs. Also Sony emphasised this and made the PSX the 'cool console' much like Sega did when they marketed Sonic as their competitor to the Fat plumber during their 'Change the System' campaign. People's complaints were valid, the N64 didn't have enough 'mature' games for the 15/25 year olds, sure there was Goldeneye but that was about it. The real problem was simply the lack of third party support, because Nintendo doesn't really make games that focus on that one demographic. Only later in the systems life did they bring out some more 'mature' content (PD, Conker, Sin and Punishent, SSB). Funnily enough so did Sony, but in the other direction, making games specifacaly for kids (Spyro, Gex and so on.). However the GameCube is a different situation, it is getting much better support because it is a machine made for the third parties and they are realising this and getting aboard. The GameCube offers a very viable platform for third parties - It's cheap for customers but very powerful and effiecient, most of all it's easy to develop for. I don't think there's any doubt about that now. Nintendo has openly said they are not going to ignore the 15/25's but they are not going to abandon little Billy and Jenny either. The point I'm making is that people have no grounds whatsoever to call the GameCube a 'kiddy console', because the GameCube is a system that has games that appeal to a wide audience.
So given that people have no grounds to point the finger at the machine itself and cry 'kiddy console', I wan't to talk about the abuse of the word when used with games. In another board, I read that someone had seen Pikmin and said,'looks good, just a bit kiddy though.' Wha? Kiddy? C'mon! What does he want? Blood dripping of the interface? The ability to beat errant Pikmin? How warped have we become? that if it's not gory, violent, bloody or lewd then it's - 'kiddy'. C'mon people! You are the only ones missing out on great games to think that way. I still meet people in their 30's that remember with joy getting every star in Mario64 and in the same breath i remember my nephew, 4 years old, that LOVED mario but could only run around in the front garden. What it comes down to is this :
GAMING IS ABOUT FUN - NOT FASHION.
Please, stop abusing that word. You can have your Black Gamecube if purple is too embarassing for you. You can have your RE:0 and Eternal Darkness to show how cool you are. But please stop calling legitamate games 'kiddy' because YOU are the only one missing out if you do.
